About Delhi

History

In ancient times, Delhi was ruled by several powerful dynasties, including the Mauryas, Pallavas, and Guptas. From the 13th to the 15th century, the city was governed by Turkic and Afghan rulers collectively known as the Delhi Sultanate.

The Mughal era began in the 16th century, leaving behind iconic architectural marvels. In 1803, the British gained control after defeating the Marathas. Delhi officially became the capital of British India in 1911, a move announced by King George V. New Delhi was inaugurated as the capital in 1931.

Economy

Delhi’s economy is largely driven by the service sector, including public administration, finance, trade, and professional services. Manufacturing has also been significant since the 1980s, while agriculture now plays a minimal role.

Old Delhi has been a vital trading hub for centuries, and today, Gurugram has emerged as a major corporate and commercial centre housing multinational companies.
